How Thick Does the Snow Need to Be for a Ski Resort to Open?

There is no universally mandatory regulation regarding the required snow depth for ski resorts worldwide. However, the industry has established a general reference standard: the core indicator for opening is the snow depth after it has been compacted by a snow groomer.


Globally, alpine ski resorts generally set a minimum threshold of 30 cm of compacted snow to open. This thickness is sufficient to completely cover rocks and tree roots on the ground, preventing collisions with skis and ensuring the basic safety of visitors. Most ski resorts in Europe, the Alps, and other regions use this as their baseline for soft openings. However, this is merely the minimum safety requirement. For stable operations throughout the entire ski season, requirements vary significantly by region:

  • Cold, High-Altitude Regions: In areas like the European Alps and Northern Canada, where temperatures are stable and natural snowfall is abundant, compacted snow depths of 45 to 60 cm are sufficient to support the entire season. Only minor, localized snowmaking is needed at night to maintain the trails.

  • Temperate, Low-Altitude Regions: In areas like Eastern North America, where the temperature difference between day and night is significant and snow melt is high, the compacted snow layer generally needs to be 60 to 70 cm thick.

  • Subtropical/Low-Latitude Artificial Resorts: In warmer regions where snow melts faster, the compacted snow layer must reach 70 to 80 cm to withstand daytime melting and reduce the need for frequent, large-scale snowmaking.

Additionally, for steep advanced runs and high-traffic areas, the snow depth needs to be increased by an extra 15 to 20 cm. Regardless of the country, ski resorts continuously inspect and replenish snow to dynamically maintain a safe snow depth, balancing both the skiing experience and operational safety.
