Can natural snow sustain the entire operational cycle of a ski resort? The answer is no. Even in extremely cold regions such as Xinjiang and Northeast China, there is not enough snow to sustain the entire cycle. Therefore, most regions in China still rely on artificial snowmaking machines to meet the needs of ski resorts. Compared to natural snow, artificial snow offers higher snowmaking efficiency at lower costs!

Artificial snowmaking machines simulate the principle of snowflake descent by adjusting the water-air ratio to produce snowflakes under suitable environmental conditions. The principle of the snowmaking machine involves injecting water into a specialized nozzle, where it comes into contact with high-pressure air. The high-pressure air divides the water stream into tiny particles and sprays them into the cold external air. Before falling to the ground, these small droplets solidify into ice crystals, which are the snowflakes we see. Therefore, the primary condition for artificial snowmaking is a temperature of zero degrees or below, which is necessary for snow to form.

Natural snow is relatively complex, being influenced by the temperature and humidity of the region it is found in. For instance, the powder snow in Japan is characterized by high humidity, high snow temperature, stickiness, and high friction; the sugar snow in Altay, Xinjiang, is characterized by low humidity, low snow temperature, granular shape, low friction, and is not prone to clumping. Soft snow is always more fun to play in, at least it's comfortable to fall on.

The fundamental difference between artificial snow and natural snow lies in its longer storage period. Artificial snow is less prone to melting and decomposition under high temperatures and sunlight, with lower moisture content and a finer, dryer, and softer texture that provides an excellent tactile experience when touching. It is more suitable for venues such as ski resorts and snow play parks. In contrast, natural snow has a shorter storage period, and it is even more vulnerable to melting under high temperatures and sunlight. Furthermore, it is difficult to maintain its whiteness, has higher moisture content, and tends to wet clothes.
